Hazard Assessment, Elimination and Control
Assess: An employer must assess a work site and identify existing and potential hazards before work begins at the work site or prior to the construction of a new worksite.
Involve: An employer must involve affected workers in the hazard assessment and in the control or eliminate the hazards identified.
OHS: OH&S Code, Part 2 9(1)
Outlines an employer’s responsibility to address identified hazards. Specifically, if a hazard assessment identifies an existing or potential hazard, the employer must take measures to eliminate it, or if elimination isn’t reasonably practicable, to control it. This section sets the stage for the subsequent sections that detail the hierarchy of controls, starting with engineering controls and progressing to administrative controls and personal protective equipment (PPE) if necessary.
Measure: If an existing or potential hazard to workers is identified during a hazard assessment, an employer must take measures in accordance with this section to :
Eliminate: Eliminate the hazards, or
Control: If elimination is not reasonably practicable, control the hazard
